Mastering the Art of Coffee: The Hario V60 Method

8 September 2023

In the realm of specialty coffee, precision is paramount, and the Hario V60 has emerged as a beloved tool among connoisseurs. The Hario V60 is more than a brewer—it’s a testament to the art of coffee making. It is renowned for its ability to craft a clean brew while unveiling the nuanced flavours of specialty coffee beans. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the history of the V60 and provide a step-by-step guide on how to brew using this iconic device.

The Origin of Excellence:

To understand the allure of the Hario V60, we must journey back to its roots. The Hario company, established in Japan in the 1920s, initially specialised in crafting precision glass laboratory instruments. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Hario ventured into the world of coffee brewers. In 2004, they unveiled the Hario V60, a revelation in the coffee world.

The “60” in V60 refers to the angle of the cone shape. This design feature proved pivotal in shaping the future of filter coffee. This distinctive cone shape, coupled with its signature filter paper, revolutionised the perception of filter coffee, dispelling the negative stereotypes that had plagued it in Australia.

Brewing with the V60:

The beauty of the V60 lies in its simplicity, making it accessible to coffee enthusiasts of all levels. To embark on your V60 brewing journey, gather these essentials: coffee beans, a kettle, a stopwatch, scales, and, of course, your trusty V60 brewer.

The V60 Brewing Process:

1. Begin by folding the filter along the zippered line and wetting it with hot water.

2. Grind 15 grams of coffee to a coarse consistency.

3. Boil approximately 250 grams of water and allow it to cool to around 91°C .

4. Initiate your timer and pour about 50 grams of water onto the coffee grounds, patiently waiting for about 30 seconds as the coffee blooms.

5. Continue adding the remaining water in pulses of roughly 25 grams each, with a 15-second interval between each pour.

6. The entire brew should conclude within 2-3 minutes.

The Hario V60 offers a straightforward, portable, and foolproof method to savour the extraordinary flavours hidden within your coffee beans.
