The Syphon Coffee Maker: What You Need To Know
1 November 2023
If you’re seeking to amaze your coffee aficionado friends, the Syphon, also known as the vacuum coffee brewer, is the device for you. Yes, it might resemble a setup straight out of a high school science experiment. Yes, it’s a complicated set up. And yes, it might make some people nervous with its use of metho and an open flame in the kitchen. But it crafts a magically smooth coffee!
How to brew coffee in a syphon brewer:
Syphon coffee maker brewing instructions:
- Fill the bottom chamber with water and ignite the heat source beneath it. As the water in the bottom chamber heats up and boils, it’s forced upward into the top chamber.
- Into the water in the top chamber, add your coffee grounds, allowing them to steep for a minute or two.
- After a brief interlude, you give it a gentle stir and remove the heat source.
- The water is then vacuumed or syphoned back through the cloth filter in the top chamber into the bottom chamber. Enjoy!
Is it worth the effort?
Syphon enthusiasts rave about the smooth taste and the clarity of the brewing method. But is it practical for your everyday caffeine fix? In my humble opinion, perhaps not. In my own kitchen, it’s the least used of all my coffee brewers. It requires a bit of time, dedication, and a relaxed mindset, making it perfect for those unhurried weekend mornings when time becomes a luxury.
What sets the Syphon apart is its unique process. Unlike espresso, which relies on a pump, or drip filters, V60s, and Chemex, which utilise gravity, the Syphon gently pulls water through the coffee grounds. The Syphon makes for a special brewing experience!
